How to spot smart-money divergence in crypto
Smart-money divergence is when prediction markets, funding rates, and price action disagree. Those disagreements are where the edge lives.
What is divergence?
Price goes up, but prediction market probabilities for bullish outcomes go down. Funding rates turn negative (shorts are paying), yet price refuses to drop. Open interest rises while price stalls. These are divergences — and they signal that the crowd is positioned one way while informed capital moves another.
The three divergence signals
1. PM divergence
SignalCue polls Polymarket every 30 minutes for crypto-relevant prediction markets (BTC above/below target, ETF approval odds, regulatory outcomes). When price moves one way and the prediction market probabilities move the opposite way, that divergence is scored and surfaced. This is the hardest signal for retail to replicate — it requires both price data and prediction market feeds.
2. Funding rate divergence
Funding rates measure whether longs or shorts are paying to keep positions open. When funding is deeply negative (shorts are crowded) but price refuses to break down, it signals a potential squeeze. When funding is high (longs are crowded) and price stalls, the leveraged rally may be exhausting. SignalCue tracks funding rates for all USDT perpetuals every 5 minutes.
3. Open interest divergence
Rising OI + rising price = healthy trend (new money entering). Rising OI + flat/falling price = distribution (smart money exiting into liquidity). SignalCue monitors OI changes over 1h and 4h windows for the top 50 perpetuals by OI USD, and flags divergences in the Cue Score.
How SignalCue uses divergence
Divergence is built into the Cue Score as an input factor. When PM divergence, funding divergence, and OI divergence all align against the price direction, conviction drops — the engine treats the move as fragile. When they align with price, conviction is higher. The regime classifier also uses divergence as an input to detect regime shifts before they're visible in price alone.
